The Silver Canadian Maple Leaf was introduced in 1988, and has been a very popular silver product ever since.

On the reverse side is the image of the sugar maple leaf. In the background (on both sides) are a series of micro-laser engraved radial lines that make it difficult for counterfeiters to reproduce the coin. Additionally, the reverse side of the coin bears a repeating maple leaf below the official image, in which you can read the year of issue only under magnification. The obverse bears Susanna Blunt’s 2003 right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen’s effigy is surrounded by the engravings of “Elizabeth II,” “5 Dollars,” and “2016.”

The Royal Canadian Mint was founded in 1908 to process precious metals from the Yukon Territories. Today it operates facilities in Ottawa and Winnipeg.
