The United States Mint Gold Eagle Coin Series was introduced in 1986, and the bullion version shown here became available in 2006. The series has been a popular favorite among collectors and investors since its debut. As the nation’s official gold bullion coin, each Eagle is minted from1.0909 troy oz of 22K (91.67% pure) gold.
The American Gold Eagle’s obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ beautiful Lady Liberty. She wears a traditional toga with her hair blowing in the wind as she stands atop a mountain overlooking the Capitol building. In her right hand, she holds a torch (a symbol of enlightenment) and her left hand holds an olive branch (a symbol of peace). Rays of sunlight illuminate the background and the image is encircled by a ring of stars.
Miley Buselik designed the reverse side of the coin. It portrays a family of eagles just as the male returns with an olive branch. His mate and their eaglet eagerly await his return, representing unity and peace. The coin bears the phrases “E Pluribus Unum” and “In God We Trust,” appears to the left and right of the eagles respectively.
